Competency Portfolio Story 3

My journey in embryology begun in 2019, when I started as a trainee embryologist. Since then, I’ve had the pleasure of working with brilliant embryologists who taught me both hands on laboratory skills and the importance of providing the best possible patient-focused care. To consolidate, organise, and reflect on the vast array of experiences and knowledge I’ve gained over the years, I decided to undertake the ARCS competency modules.

The modules cover the broad topic of working in a HFEA- licensed IVF lab, as part of a multidisciplinary team, as well as the theory of reproductive biology and the endocrine system and their application in IVF. While completing these modules requires considerable effort and dedication, they have proven to be invaluable tools that encapsulate my years of experience and research.

I personally found the modules to be an effective way to summarise my knowledge and experience and at the same time, they gave me the opportunity to research topics on which I felt I needed to expand my knowledge and to also discuss with senior colleagues aspects of troubleshooting and quality control. Additionally, I believe that the competency modules are a great way to compile all the necessary information needed as a guide when it comes to completing my portfolio and HCPC registration. I would highly recommend the ARCS modules to anyone who is looking to broaden their expertise in embryology in order to become better equipped to work in an accredited laboratory.
