Using an unregulated sperm donor found on an app, website, or social media may cause serious medical, legal, and emotional risks that will have lifelong impacts for patients and any children born. Unregulated sperm donation is when the process of donating sperm takes place outside a HFEA licensed clinic. This means that the person receiving the donation will have no legal protection.

Patients are being exploited and taken advantage of by unregulated sperm donors they can access on line. The lack of NHS funding means patients may consider unregulated donation as a more affordable option for treatment, without knowing the risks.
